As people living with HIV grow older, heart disease is emerging as a major public health problem despite effective treatments that suppress the virus and extend life. Research supported by the National Institutes of Health suggests that people living with HIV are 50 to 100 percent more likely to develop cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke, than people without HIV. Currently, there are no approved strategies for heart disease prevention tailored to people living with HIV.
