Did you know that walking can lower your risk of heart-related conditions as much as running?
A study funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute1, 2, suggests that similar to running, walking can lower risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.
Equal energy expenditures by walking at a medium pace and running at a high pace can lead to a similar reduction in common risk factors for heart disease including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and coronary heart disease2, 3.
Researchers from this study showed that among those with self-reported, physician diagnosed high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or coronary heart disease over a 6 year follow up period2:
♥ Walking significantly reduced risk for incident [first time] high blood pressure 7.2%, compared to running, 4.2%1,2 ♥ Walking reduced risk for incident high cholesterol 7 %, compared to running 4.3%1,2, ♥ Walking reduced risk for incident diabetes 12.3%, compared to running 12.1%1,2 ♥ Walking reduced risk for incident coronary heart disease 9.3%, compared to running 4.5%1,2 ♥
